Skincare, with the multitude of options available, can be overwhelming and confusing.  Moisturizing is the fourth step in your daily skincare routine. When you are choosing a moisturizer it is important to consider both your skin type and the climate – winter in North America is a totally different beast than summer in the southern areas.

For those of you who have oily skin, consider a water based lotion, rather than a cream.  Consider selecting a moisturizer that is also an exfoliant, based with Plant Based Hyaluronic Acid. If you have dry skin, find a cream based moisturizer.  Creams tend to have more oil, and be a little thicker. Look for ones packed with Vitamin E oil and Sunflower oil. Creams are also great for winter protection from the elements.  Normal or combination skin- try a lotion for the daytime, and a cream for the night, giving your skin the best of both worlds.  Avoid lotions with acids, and stick with natural products.

When you are looking for a new moisturizer, it’s worthwhile to patch test, especially if you have sensitive skin or allergic reactions.  The best moisturizer is one that suits your skin’s needs. Consider what the ingredients are and know which ones will address your individual needs.  If you have dull or flaky skin, your first instinct may be to go for a scrub or peel. However, there is a difference between dull and dry. Chances are, flaking means that your skin is lacking hydration, so use an oil over your moisturizer and exfoliating could cause further irritation unless you use a gentle one.

How To Use It:

  • First, clean your skin with a gentle cleanser, to remove any dirt and grease from your skin.
  • Follow up with a gentle serum.  Please note that water based serums should be applied before moisturizing, while oil based serums should be applied after.
  • Moisturize directly, to the damp skin and gently massage in. If it’s night time.
  • Follow up with a targeted oil or mix 4-6 drops of the oil in with your moisturizer.

TIP: Day creams and night creams have different roles, so it is important to select the right cream for the job at hand.  Your skin does most of its rebuilding and repair at night. As such, night creams are often packed with active recovery ingredients, such as peptides and retinols.  They are generally thicker, and more nourishing. A day cream is lighter, and appropriate to wear under makeup, throughout the day.
