BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) are synthetic antioxidants that are often used as preservatives in cosmetics. Additionally, this chemical is a potent antioxidant, which is also known to causes cancer in rats, mice, and hamsters.

Cancer: Moreover, the International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified BHA and BHT as possible human carcinogens.

Encochrine Disruption: In addition, the European Commission under Endocrine Disruptors lists the chemical as a priority substance, as evidence suggests it interferes with hormone function.

Developmental and Reproductive Toxicity: In contrast, a recent study found that high dosage exposure of the chemical correlated to underdevelopment of the male and female reproductive systems in rats.

Ultimately, the California State Law has required this chemical to be listed as an ingredient that causes cancer.
